Change is coming to the World Series by Renault in 2015 in the form of a new sports car championship and she is a beauty. The Renault Sport Trophy will serve as a feeder series for the likes of Le Mans, GT racing and the World Endurance Championship. The R.S.01 is innovative in its field as it boasts a performance much like a DTM machine with drag efficiency near to the Formula Renault 3.5 models, the single seater formulae closest to Formula 1. With a top speed of 300kph, equivalent to 186mph, Renault Sport’s latest design is well placed to cater as a training tool for promising young racers, somewhere the World Series by Renault excels. It is a unique hybrid not seen elsewhere. To succeed in the evolved concept car, drivers must utilise the technological efficiency designed by Laurens van den Acker – the man behind Renault’s recent evolution. Its aerodynamic capabilities occur as a direct result of air being transferred by the stem of the chassis towards the water coolers. The unveiling of the R.S.01 at the Moscow Raceway on August 27th, highlighted an element of continuity within Renault Sport Technologies. Nismo will, once again, provide engine power, installing a V6 3.8l twin-turbo into the rear of the Renault R.S.01 while FR3.5 partners Dallara will provide the Italian chassis to allow a vehicle weight of just 1,100kg. Michelin will supply specifically designed 18-inch tyres for next year’s running. Meanwhile, the braking system includes 380 mm carbon discs from PFC Brakes with Bosch Motorsport ABS systems which, alongside hydraulic power steering, will aid handling. It is hoped that the combination of all these features will merge both proficiency and endurance. LMP1 designed, its specifications meet 2014 Le Mans standards so has been deemed safe enough to compete at the 24 hour event. However no such intentions have been publically announced at this stage. The R.S.01 will be viewable at the penultimate round in Paul Ricard. This news comes not long after the announcement that Renault Sport had extended their contracts with partners to seal the future of its flagship series Formula Renault 3.5 until at least 2017.
“Renault Sport R.S. 01 marks the start of a new line. For this reason, it was named in tribute to Renault’s very first Formula 1 vehicle. We wanted to design the best racing car in order to bring to light the best talent and prepare the next generation of drivers. Renault Sport R.S. 01 is a vehicle of exceptional performance and the World Series by Renault will be its showcase.” – Patrice Ratti, CEO of Renault Sport Technologies
